A Meditation on Love

Echo Lamp

In late 2018, Wallpaper magazine invited us to collaborate with Maison Integre to create a piece for the Wallpaper Handmade exhibit, "Love." Maison Integre is a Paris-based design house that specializes in working with artisans in Burkina Faso. Brendan, who was born and raised in West Africa, wanted to work with craftpersons in the region and Wallpaper made the introduction that would lead to the creation of our Echo Lamp.

Together with the team at Maison Integre, we decided to use a lost wax brass casting process to create a lamp that would embody the theme of love. The resulting design is a lamp in two parts that engage in a relationship with each other. One part is a light source that cradles a bulb in a brass shell, the other is a stand alone reflector that captures and bounces the light back in a soft reflected glow.

OUR PROCESS

Artisans in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso work from drawings to sculpt original beeswax positives of the lamp.

The wax positives are fitted with wax pour sprues and encased in a mixture of clay, horse dung and metal wire to create the casting shell.

The casting shell is heated to melt the wax, which is poured out and captured for reuse.

The newly hollow casting shell is placed in a shallow hole where molten brass made from recycled plumbing fittings is ladled into the pour sprues, filling the cavity created from the lost wax.

After cooling for ninety minutes, the casting shell is broken up to reveal the casting inside.

The pour sprues are cut off and the casting is cleaned up with metal files to arrive at the polished final form.
