INTERIORS

Every so often our Studio takes on an interior design commission, typically for close friends opening restaurants on the west coast, places like Eszett, Osteria La Buca, Black Hogg, Osteria Moto, and Osteria La Buca Sherman Oaks.

Designing an interior challenges us to think at a different scale than our lighting. It puts us in the shoes of our clients, the architects and interior designers who design spaces as their daily practice. Projects like these often help us identify needs we can fill with future lighting designs.

Scroll through for snapshots below from a few of these custom projects.

OSTERIA LA BUCA - SFV

During the pandemic we designed Osteria La Buca's new outpost in the San Fernando Valley. We used built-ins to define the space, booths and banquettes with simplified forms reminiscent of church pews. We softened their rectilinear edges with radiuses and curves wherever they engage a diner.

We carried this radius edge through the space, with the edges of the bar, walls, ceiling beams and wainscoting all softened by considered curves.

The reduced material palette creates a calming environment through a careful attention to detail and a high level of craft.

The result is a modern take on traditional forms. A warm welcoming space that plays with form and light. A restaurant that feels of the place but also a place apart.

ESZETT

We helped two Angelenos, Sabrina and Spencer Bezaire, bring their long incubated restaurant vision to life, creating a space that looks refined but feels like you're dining at their kitchen table.

ESZETT

For Eszett, we established a material palate of white oak, terrazzo and terracotta paint, colors and textures inspired by Southern California tones and the reductive simplicity of the Louis Kahn’s Salk Institute.

ESZETT

We worked with the talented team from Eagle Rock Restoration on the build-out of Eszett, removing drop ceilings to expose wood beams and making use of extensive built-ins to give diners the feeling of being right at home.

OSTERIA LA BUCA

Our first top-to-bottom interior renovation started when the owner of Osteria La Buca saw our Bottle Opener for Areaware in an industry magazine and knew he wanted to work with us to redesign and expand his successful restaurant.

We oversaw an expansion, installed a zinc bartop, painted new exterior and interior signage, refinished most surfaces, and designed custom chairs and lighting for the space.

The prototypes for our Cord Family of lights were developed for Osteria La Buca, and still hang there today nearly 10 years later.

OSTERIA MOTO

For Osteria Moto, we sourced local materials to anchor this northern California restaurant in place, using alderwood and limestone, with leather, linen and brass details. We created a rhythm of light and shadow to underscore the restaurant’s warmth and conviviality.

OSTERIA MOTO

We used an open layout and clerestory windows to flood the space with light, adding built-in seating and placing lighting intentionally to define distinct and intimate zones, from a communal table for waiting patrons, to the large inviting bar, and cozy banquettes.
